NYS DEC Safely Tranquilizes and Relocates Wandering Moose from Troy Neighborhoods đ«đČ
An unexpected forest visitor captivated residents across Rensselaer County this week as a young moose wandered through residential streets and busy corridors across East Greenbush and South Troy.
Wildlife biologists and Environmental Conservation Officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) swiftly stepped in to secure the animal and protect public safety:
• The Urban Wanderer: The moose drew viral attention after being spotted grazing near roadways and suburban fences, raising serious collision risks along busy commuter paths.
• Safe Tranquilization Operation: DEC wildlife specialists successfully tracked and safely darted the animal in South Troy without incident.
• Return to the Wild: Loaded carefully onto a transport flatbed, the unconscious moose was relocated back to suitable wilderness habitat in eastern Rensselaer County, far away from urban traffic.
• Fall Rut Season Reminder: DEC reminds motorists that moose are actively on the move during autumn breeding season (rut)—drivers are urged to slow down and stay alert, especially around dawn and dusk!
A textbook rescue operation showing conservation and animal welfare at work.
